The Peirce School Kindergarten team recognizes that there are four important areas of child development: Kindergarten cognitive, social, emotional and physical.  We understand that to prepare learners for a lifetime of success in learning, each domain must be addressed in conjunction with the others.

Cognitively, students in Kindergarten are learning the sound/symbol relationship in preparation for reading using a phonics based curriculum.  New letters are introduced weekly and reinforced through song, play, art and other modalities.  In Math, students are working on numbers to 100, grouping, patterns, and simple arithmetic processes.

Socially, students in Kindergarten learn sharing and cooperation as they work in small groups throughout the day.  Because our school follows the Responsive Classroom model, each day begins with a morning meeting where we gather for a greeting, announcements, sharing, and a game.

Emotionally, Kindergarten needs to be a safe place for all children.  As teachers, we focus on children's strengths, and work to address each child's individual needs in the classroom.

Physically, Kindergarteners are growing at a fast pace.  This year we work to develop fine motor skills, like cutting with scissors and tying shoes, as well as gross motor skills like skipping, hopping and dancing.

The Peirce School Kindergarten Program also includes classes in our computer lab, fine arts instruction, physical education, music and literacy.  Physical education classes promote health-related fitness and the effects of exercise and nutrition. Art and music classes begin encouraging a deeper appreciation and knowledge of these disciplines.

Our mission is to enhance learning opportunities for students by providing an environment where the student's natural love for life and learning are encouraged and nurtured so that the students will be lifelong learners. We will strive to create a strong sense of community while creating a caring and respectful environment.
